What happens at Masonic Lodge meetings? 2016-11-04T13:44:05+00:00

Philanthropic Lodge No.168 conducts regular Stated Communications, or meetings, on the first and third Wednesday of the month. During the summer months the lodge is closed and considered “at recess”.  After The Pledge of Allegiance and a Masonic Prayer, the lodge conducts a regular business meeting. All meetings are conducted in Masonic Ritual. Petitions for Membership, old and new business, financial and committee reports are discussed. Informative speakers, special events, fundraisers, dinners, and community support and charity, are what Mason’s do at Philanthropic Lodge. Refreshments are served after each Regular Communication.  Refreshment is where the bonds of friendship and brotherly love are cemented.

Many of our nation’s early patriots were Freemasons, as well as thirteen signers of the United States Constitution and fourteen Presidents of the United States, beginning with George Washington.  Today there are more than four million Freemasons around the world who come from virtually every occupation and profession.  Within the Fraternity, however, they all meet as equals.  They come from diverse political and religious ideologies, but they meet as friends and believe in one Deity.

Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest Fraternity.  Freemasonry’s history and tradition date to antiquity.  Freemasonry’s singular purpose is to make good men better.  Freemasonry’s bonds of friendship, compassion and brotherly love have survived even the most divisive political, military and religious conflicts throughout the centuries.  Freemasonry is neither a forum nor a place for worship.  Instead, it is a friend of all religions which are based on the belief in one Deity.

Freemasons are responsible citizens who conform to the moral and legal laws of the government under which we live.  They are men of charity and good works.  Freemasons remain unchallenged as “the world’s greatest philanthropy!”   Freemasons in the United States contribute more than one and a half million dollars every day to charitable causes, which they alone have established.

Freemasonry is proud of its philosophy and practice of “making good men better.”  Only individuals of the finest moral character are considered for membership.  Every applicant must advocate his belief in the existence of a Supreme Being.  In Maryland, a Candidate for Freemasonry must be 18 years of age or older.

A man of good report may seek to become a Freemason by simply asking. We are here to talk with you about our Fraternity! If you are ready, click here to contact us! 

A potential candidate must complete a Petition (application), stating his name, age, place of residence, occupation and place of employment.  Four (4) Character References are also needed. Once the Petitioner turns in all paperwork and initiation fees, an Investigating Committee made up of three (3) Lodge Members, conducts an interview and vetting process. The Lodge Members then vote on the Petitioner from the recommendations made by the Investigating Committee. Vote by secret ballot is made. To be accepted the ballot must be unanimous.
